Protein, without the gym-bro hype

Protein, without the gym-bro hype

I spent years as a fitness coach, and I have watched protein turn into a personality. Shaker bottles, macros memorised to the gram, a powder for every hour of the day. Some people thrive on that. Most just burn out. Here is the calmer version.

How much you actually need

For most active adults, the research clusters around 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day — meaningfully more than the bare minimum, but nowhere near the mountain the internet implies. For someone around 70 kg, that is roughly 85 to 110 grams a day.

The bigger lever is not the daily total; it is the spread. Your body uses protein best in moderate amounts across the day, not one enormous serving at dinner. Little and often beats heroic and rare.

The quiet way to get there

This is where cooking does the heavy lifting. If your bread, your pasta and your weekend pancakes each carry a little more protein and fibre, the total adds up on its own — no scoop of powder required.

  • Build protein into meals you already eat
  • Aim for a little at each one, not a wall at night
  • Let fibre come along for the ride — most of us need far more
  • Keep the food you love; just upgrade the base

Why fibre belongs in the same breath

Protein gets the headlines; fibre does the unglamorous work — digestion, fullness, steady energy — and almost everyone falls short. The nice thing about a wheat-based flour is that it brings both at once, with no trade-off to manage.

You do not need to make protein your whole identity. You need a few good habits that survive a busy Tuesday. Build it into the staples, and it takes care of itself.
